Hahaha, it’s funny that when I looked up on the internet, this was known as sesame gruel, but then, gruel isn’t really an appealing word… Even though I didn’t even really know what it meant, the sound of the word was like… GRUEL.

OMG, this is like CHILDHOOD MEMORIES here, I used to have this when I was a little kid…

They also sell pre-packaged versions of this at the Asian supermarket where all you do is add water, but I wanted to make a healthier version of it… So here it is!

I used grape juice to give the drink its sweetness, but be sure the juice you use is 100% fruit juice, don’t use ones where they add all these other stuff. Also, it may be hard for you to find ground up sesame seeds, so you can try making your own by putting black sesame seeds in the blender.

Black Sesame Smoothie (Sesame Gruel or Zhi ma hu)

1 1/2 cup 100% concord grape juice (or white grape juice)
1 cup ground black sesame powder
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1/4 cup oat flour (or instant oats, ground into a flour)
1/4 cup brown rice flour

Note: If you don’t have ground black sesame, simply put a packet of black sesame seeds into the blender and grind until it’s a thick powder.

Add all the ingredients into a small saucepan and turn the heat to medium high (5).

Let it simmer for about 12 minutes. You can let it simmer on its own for the first 5 minutes, but then you will need to stir constantly because it gets thick and easily clump together or stick to the bottom.
